IdentityI made this piece for a class at Michigan State University, in which we were just learning to use Photoshop and had to manipulate a picture in order to explore an aspect of our identities. I chose to create this image for a couple reasons; one, I thought it would look pretty cool, and two, I thought it illustrated how important choice is for me as a college student. I was going into my senior year and was struggling to decide on the direction of my life. I had always been struck by the symbolism in the Matrix scene where Orpheus offers Nero the two pills, and it resonated with me enough that I wanted to use it to illustrate the feelings of college students.

Book Cover For this document, I wanted to redesign the cover of one of my favorite books. The book is a Young Adult fiction novel about assassin nuns in France. I love the book, but I’ve always had mixed feelings about the cover. I find the use of models on YA novels seriously overused, which isn’t necessarily bad, but I prefer simple, timeless covers.
For my redesign, I wanted to keep the air of mystery that the book pushes, as well as keeping some key elements of the story. I chose a dark and misty forest not only for its weight and essence, but also because an important scene in the book occurs in the forests of Brittany. I chose to keep the text white to contrast the dark picture and make the colors pop. As for fonts, I liked the clear-cut lines that bold Century Gothic set against the dark background. It feels very clean, which I like. I used a very script-y font for the tagline and the author’s name to add contrast, and used Illustrator to create the crossbow, which is an important part of the story. I made the text boxes transparent so that the background wouldn’t be lost to an overabundance of black. Overall, I feel like my cover does a good job of showing a glimpse of the story while remaining simple and timeless. |
Word ArtI created this image for the same document design class, we were supposed to play with words in Photoshop. I have always been invested in our world and have a passion for our environment, and I wanted to convey the urgency of the effects of climate change. I wanted this piece to work in two ways: to illustrate the fact that our world is changing, and to call other people to change the behaviors that are affecting our planet so negatively.
Color ManipulationIn the same class, we were learning to manipulate color in Photoshop. For my own document, I wanted to use color to showcase the vibrancy of the sea. I wanted to show how colorful the world is under the water.

PosterI made this poster in InDesign for the same class. We were given a lot of freedom in what to create, so I chose to make a poster with one of my favorite quotes from The Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin.
I wanted to use a background that felt cold and distant in order to aid the weight of the words. I kept everything simple in order to illustrate the stark meaning of the phrase. I chose to stack the words instead of having them side by side because there wasn’t enough room to do so, and it also didn’t have as much impact. The stacking allowed for Morghulis to become more dynamic and expansive, which I thought was really powerful. I kept everything centered to create an atmosphere of order and absolution. I included the tagline “all men must die” in a script font not only as a translation, but to add contrast to the sans-serif main content. The tagline is also more well-known than the actual phrase, as it adds context to otherwise gibberish words. For this project, I designed something that I would actually hang in my room, and I’m very satisfied with the result |
